Obama calls for 'urgent' resolve after job loss figures

AFP/Getty Images/File – President-elect Barack Obama, seen here on December 03, 2008, called for an "urgent" effort
WASHINGTON (AFP) – President-elect Barack Obama on Friday called for an "urgent" effort to put people back to work and to stimulate the US economy after the release of the worst job loss figures in 34 years. "There are not quick or easy fixes to this crisis, which has been many years in the making, and it's likely to get worse before it gets better," Obama warned in a statement. "But now is the time to respond with urgent resolve to put people back to work and get our economy moving again," Obama said. "The 533,000 jobs lost last month, the worst job loss in 34 years, is more than a dramatic reflection of the growing economic crisis we face.

"Each of those lost jobs represents a personal crisis for a family somewhere in America."
Obama vowed to push forward his economic recovery plan which he says will create at least 2.5 million more jobs over two years while shoring up the flow of credit.

The president-elect, who takes office on January 20, also said the "painful crisis" offered an opportunity to transform the US economy to unleash infrastructure programs to modernize schools, rebuild roads and push energy reform. Obama issued his statement after the release of stunning new Labor Department figures which showed the US economy lost a stunning 533,000 jobs in November, sending the unemployment rate to a 15-year high of 6.7 percent.
The monthly report on non-farm payrolls, seen as one of the best indicators of economic momentum, highlighted the severe retrenchment by companies in the face of a struggling economy and tight credit. The number of job losses was much higher than the 325,000 expected by private

SUNDAK BEACH, DOG AND SEA URCHIN FIGHT WHICH RESULT A BLESSING

Sundak Beach does not only have enchanting natural view but it also keeps story. The name Sundak turns to experience evolution of which evidences can be traced geologically.

In order to know its evolution, visitors must know first the condition the sea sides of Sundak Beach in the past and at present time. At the west side of the beach there is a mosque and a vacant space that is now utilized as a parking area. On the east side, there is a cave made of coral reef as high as around 12 meters. Entering the cave, there is a spring from which local people get fresh water.

Before 1930 the above area was still under sea water. The story tells that sea water reached the area where the mosque stands now and the cave was submerged in sea water. In line with geological process in the south sea, the sea water level decreased and sea water stood out more to the sea. The coral reef and the area around the mosque became new land that later coastal people used it for economy activities until today.

There was unique, natural phenomenon of the activity that finally served as starting point of naming this beach. When rainy season came, there was much water from the land flowing to the sea. Consequently, the land on east side of the beach split to make a river-look form. The flowing water looked like splitting the sand. When dry season came, the crevice disappeared since the sea water came ashore and drag away the sand. The name Wedibelah (the split sand) originated from this natural phenomenon. When YogYES visited the place, the crevice did not exist.

Tens of years later the name changed. In 1976, there was an interesting occurrence. In an afternoon, there was a dog running about the seaside and entered the cave where it met a sea urchin. Being starving, the dog tried to prey on the sea urchin but the sea urchin avoided. Then, the fight happened and finally the dog succeeded in eating half of the sea urchin body and the dog got out of the cave proudly. The owner of the dog, Arjasangku, saw half of the sea urchin body was still in the dog's mouth. Since then, the name Wedibedah was changed into Sundak as an abbreviation of asu (Javanese language for dog) and landak (Javanese language for sea urchin).

The quarrel turned to bring fortune for local people. After being short of water for years, local people finally found a spring. Initially, the owner of the dog was astonished that his dog was soaking wet after getting out of the cave. The hypothesis was that there was a spring inside the cave and the dog might fall in it while hunting the sea urchin. After some investigations, the prediction turned out to be true. Now, the spring functions as source of fresh water for local inhabitants. Pipes are now installed from the cave to distribute water to the community. The finding of the spring consoled the community who were disappointed because the wells that they dug were inundated by sea water.

Just imagine the condition of the area hundreds of years ago when we know its condition in 1930s. There had to be many organisms that utilized the lower part of the coral reef that now functions as a cave. For the reason, many archeologists believe that as the consequence of the occurring geological process, there were many sea organisms were left and piled up as fossils. Not many researches reveal what fossils exist in the area.

In addition to offering its silent historical witnesses, Sundak also offers enjoyable night atmosphere. You can enjoy the breeze of the night wind while ordering fresh fish to be grilled together with your friends. You only have to pay some thousands Rupiah for the firewood. If you are reluctant to do so, just order ready-to-eat grilled fish. To spend the night, you can just sleep anywhere; you can put up your tent or just lying on the bench of food sellers that are not used at night. Darkness can sometimes be more enjoyable than brightness. Don't worry about it.

If you want it, interact with local people can be valuable enlightenment. You can understand how people live their lives, their culture, and they might change your life point of view. To see Grandpa Tugiman who usually keeps the parking area or Grandpa Arjasangku can be another option. They are examples of the leaders of Sundak Beach. To have a talk with them does not only make you merely see the history witnesses but it enables you get direct story from the witnesses of how the story was carved. Please come, they all are waiting for you!. (created by yogyes)

Obama Promises Governors That Federal Help Is on the Way

President-elect Barack Obama with Gov. Edward G. Rendell of Pennsylvania at a conference of the National Governors Association in Philadelphia on Tuesday. By PETER BAKER and IAN URBINA Published: December 2, 2008

PHILADELPHIA — With the economic crisis tearing holes in most state budgets, President-elect Barack Obama promised the nation’s governors on Tuesday that he would come to their aid with an ambitious program to build or repair roads, bridges, schools and other public projects.

Summoning state executives from across the country here, Mr. Obama sought to forge a bipartisan approach to the nation’s economic problems. He was met with pleas for a rapid infusion of federal money to create jobs, help those without health coverage and balance recession-ripped budgets.

“To solve this crisis and to ease the burden on our states, we’re going to need action, and we’re going to need action swiftly,” Mr. Obama told the governors in the historic Congress Hall, where lawmakers met in the early days of the Republic. “That means passing an economic recovery plan that helps both Wall Street and Main Street. And this administration does not intend to delay in getting you the help that we need.”

In a symbolic gesture of partnership with the governors, Mr. Obama plans to announce Wednesday that he has recruited another of their peers for his cabinet. At a news conference in Chicago, Mr. Obama will formally introduce Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico as his choice for secretary of commerce, Democrats close to the process said. Mr. Richardson, a former rival for the Democratic presidential nomination, threw his support to Mr. Obama after dropping out of the race despite intense courting by Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton and former President Bill Clinton.

Mr. Richardson will be the second governor elevated this week, after Janet Napolitano from neighboring Arizona was chosen Monday as secretary of homeland security. The commerce slot will be a consolation prize of sorts for Mr. Richardson, who wanted to be secretary of state but lost to Mrs. Clinton.

Hispanic groups have lobbied strongly on behalf of Mr. Richardson, who would be the only Latino cabinet officer named so far. Activists argue that a surge of Hispanic votes for Mr. Obama helped secure at least four states won by President Bush four years ago: Colorado, Florida, Nevada and New Mexico.

Mr. Richardson was one of few current or incoming governors not on hand Tuesday at the National Governors Association meeting convened by Mr. Obama. Among those in the hall were Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska, the Republican vice-presidential candidate, and several Republican governors who might run against Mr. Obama in 2012, including Bobby Jindal of Louisiana. Mr. Obama made a point of reaching out to them.

“A special message I want to deliver to my Republican colleagues who are here,” Mr. Obama said, flanked by Vice President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. “I offer you the hand of friendship, the same commitment to partnership as I do my Democratic colleagues. There is a time for campaigning, and there is a time for governing. And one of the messages that Joe and I want to continually send is that we are not going to be hampered by ideology in trying to get this country back on track.”

Several governors said they were heartened by Mr. Obama’s interest in meeting with them so early. “He’s not going to let us hang in the wind,” Gov.Brian Schweitzer of Montana, incoming chairman of the Democratic Governors Association, said in an interview afterward. “And he said, ‘This is an introduction, not an ending meeting.’ ”

Other than a visit to the White House, the meeting was Mr. Obama’s first appearance outside Chicago since the election.

More than 40 states face budget shortfalls now totaling $30 billion and projected to rise to $60 billion by summer, with $120 billion more in spending gaps anticipated in the next fiscal year. Unlike the federal government, most states are required to balance their budgets annually.

Hoping to shape the economic package Mr. Obama wants to sign soon after taking office, the governors are seeking $136 billion for infrastructure projects already on the books and ready to break ground within months, and $40 billion to cover increased Medicaid costs. In addition to traditional roads and bridges, the projects would include improved medical information technology and expanded broadband Internet capacity.

“I’ve got hundreds of thousands of people in West Virginia who need safe drinking water and sanitation and roads,” that state’s governor, Joe Manchin III, said in an interview. “That’s investment, that’s not spending money. We don’t want to just throw money at something.”

Gov. Edward G. Rendell of Pennsylvania, chairman of the National Governors Association, said his colleagues were not “asking for handouts,” emphasizing that states were doing their share by cutting spending and financing part of the cost of public works projects. “We are not asking for this money for ourselves,” said Mr. Rendell, a Democrat. “We are asking for it for the citizens of our states.”

Mr. Obama did not commit to specific aid numbers, but his incoming chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, told reporters on the plane ride back to Chicago that the new president agreed with the thrust of the requests. “We need to rebuild America,” Mr. Emanuel said. “We need to build those critical areas today to do it, and an economic recovery act has to do that.”

Mr. Emanuel said governors of both parties agreed, but a few expressed reservations about the fiscal impact of such spending. “The main question for some of us is how will going further into debt help the economy with problems that are created by debt,” said Gov.Mark Sanford of South Carolina, a Republican.

Still, when asked at a news conference whether any would forgo federal money to hold down the deficit, none of the governors present volunteered.

“There is not a governor in this country that would turn down money for roads and bridges and infrastructure projects,” said Gov. Michael F. Easley of North Carolina, a Democrat. “The need is simply too great for those sorts of repairs and that work.”

Long Road Behind Him, Richardson Gets a Post

Bill Richardson joined Barack Obama for the announcement Wednesday that Mr. Richardson was commerce secretary-designate. By PETER BAKER, Published: December 3, 2008

CHICAGO — At some point during the long series of Democraticpresidential debates, Bill Richardson came to realize that he was not exactly the center of attention. Most of the questions were going to the star candidates, and he began tuning out.

So when a moderator turned to him with a question on one occasion when he was not listening, he panicked — until he was saved by the candidate next to him. “Katrina!”Barack Obama whispered. “Katrina!” Mr. Richardson then offered his response on the hurricane that had ravaged New Orleans.

“He could have thrown me under the bus,” Mr. Richardson later recalled, “but he stood behind me.”

Mr. Obama stood with him again Wednesday, in announcing here that Mr. Richardson, governor of New Mexico, was his choice for secretary of commerce.

For Mr. Richardson, who has gone from being the nation’s most prominent Hispanic official to an afterthought on the presidential campaign trail, from a target of the angry Clinton camp to cabinet nominee of the president-elect, the journey has been tumultuous. His destination proved to be not the presidency, as he had hoped, or the vice presidency or secretary of state. But Mr. Obama said Wednesday that it was not a consolation prize, either.

“Well,” he said, flanked by Mr. Richardson, “commerce secretary is a pretty good job, you know. It’s a member of my key economic team that is going to be dealing with the most significant issue that America faces right now, and that is how do we put people back to work and rejuvenate the economy.”

Mr. Richardson, 61, is the third defeated member of the Democratic presidential field to join the nascent administration, after Vice President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. and Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, selected for secretary of state. It could get a little uncomfortable in the Cabinet Room when Mr. Richardson looks across the table at Mrs. Clinton, whose husband appointed him to high office only to see him endorse Mr. Obama instead of her last spring.

In the end, though, Mrs. Clinton got the job he had wanted, so she can afford to move on. Certainly Mr. Richardson sounded ready to do so on Wednesday. “There are some who speak of a team of rivals,” he said. “But I’ve never seen it that way. Past competitors, yes. But ‘rivals’ implies something harder-edged and less forgiving.”

Mr. Richardson’s path to the Obama cabinet has been long and winding. After being elected to the House in 1982, he earned a reputation as a diplomatic troubleshooter parachuting into danger zones to free prisoners or negotiate deals. President Bill Clinton made him ambassador to the United Nations and later secretary of energy.

Along the way, Mr. Richardson became known for a gregarious drive as well as a taste for the limelight. In his memoir, he agreed with the 1992 Almanac of American Politics, which called him “an ambitious and often pushy politician who has sometimes taken impolitic stands for no apparent reason except the conviction that they were right.” George magazine, less kindly, ranked him a top-10 “publicity hound.”

His tenure at the Energy Department was marred by reports of nuclear security lapses atLos Alamos National Laboratory. At one contentious hearing, Senator Robert C. Byrd, Democrat of West Virginia, told him that he would never again “receive the support of the Senate of the United States for any office to which you might be appointed.”

Al Gore passed him over for vice president in 2000, so Mr. Richardson returned to New Mexico to run for governor, at one point setting a Guinness Book world record by shaking 13,392 hands in eight hours. But he found little success at the presidential level this year. After dropping out, he grew a beard, a small act of defiance as he contemplated his future.

Seeking his endorsement, the Clinton camp believed that he was holding out for a promise of appointment as secretary of state. When he backed Mr. Obama, he was compared to Judas by the Clinton adviser James Carville.

Mr. Richardson denied such crass motives, citing instead Mr. Obama’s ability “to bridge our divisions as a nation.”

Mr. Carville remains unconvinced. Asked about Wednesday’s announcement, he said: “I think it’s fine. I’ve had my say on him. I was quoted accurately and in context.”

Hispanic leaders had lobbied for Mr. Richardson, arguing that Latino voters were a vital part of the coalition that had brought Mr. Obama victory. The president-elect said Wednesday that he had picked Mr. Richardson because of his experience, not his ethnicity, but vowed to produce a diverse team. He has his eye on Representative Xavier Becerra, Democrat of California, for United States trade representative.

“I think people are going to say this is one of the most diverse cabinets and White House staffs of all time,” Mr. Obama said. “But more importantly, they’re going to say these are all people of outstanding qualifications and excellence.”

For Mr. Richardson, it is time to return to the national stage. The beard is gone, much to the disappointment of Mr. Obama, who joked that “I thought that whole Western rugged look was really working for him.”

The commerce post may often be simply a plum for a fund-raiser, but it is nonetheless a step up the official chart. Assuming Mr. Byrd was wrong and the Senate confirms him, Mr. Richardson will be 10th in line for the presidency, up from 15th when he was energy secretary.

And there are still rungs to climb, admirers say. “This isn’t the final stop for Bill Richardson,” said Brian S. Colón, New Mexico Democratic chairman. “I’d bet money on it.”

Specialized 2009 Kembali Normal

Soal harganya, berada pada kisaran US$ 1.599-5.499.
